EXPLORING SMA NEGERI 1 STUDENTS' AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING IN JEJAWI OGAN KOMERING ILIR
This research aims to explore students’ awareness and understanding of climate change through English language learning in a rural senior high school context. A descriptive quantitative study was conducted involving 200 students from grades X to XII at SMA Negeri 1 Jejawi, Ogan Komering Ilir. Data were collected using an online questionnaire consisting of 15 Likert-scale items measuring students’ awareness of climate change issues and their understanding of climate change concepts presented in English learning materials. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean scores and standard deviations. The findings indicate that students demonstrated a relatively high level of awareness of climate change, particularly regarding its global nature, human causes, and environmental impacts encountered through English texts and classroom activities. However, students’ understanding showed more varied results, especially in higher-order aspects such as distinguishing climate from weather, summarizing solution-oriented texts, and expressing opinions in English. These results suggest that English language learning effectively raises students’ climate change awareness but requires stronger instructional support to foster deeper conceptual understanding, particularly in rural EFL contexts.
