KONSTRUKSI GENDER DALAM VIDEO MUSIK THE MAN KARYA TAYLOR SWIFT (ANALISIS SEMIOTIKA CHARLES SANDERS PEIRCE)
Culturally, gender is an attribute inherent to men and women. The differences between men and women naturally cannot be separated from the cultural context, which often underlies the differences in roles within society. As a result, the imbalance of roles between men and women can, in some cases, lead to male dominance over women. This aligns with this study, which discusses how gender is constructed in Taylor Swift's music video "The Man," highlighting gender as shaped through satirical critique of hegemonic masculinity behaviors. The background of this research stems from the growing visual representation that normalizes male dominance and gender bias in popular media. The aim of the study is to identify visual signs regarding gender construction and interpret their meaning in the context of social construction. This study uses Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis method through the categories of sign, object, and interpretant to reveal the symbolic meanings constructed in each scene of the music video The Man. The results of the study show that the music video both reproduces and critiques various gender practices such as domination of public spaces, objectification of women, male social privilege, as well as double standards in relationships and parenting roles. Through visual structure, body gestures, satirical narrative, and cinematic framing, Taylor Swift presents a deconstruction of patriarchal norms that have been internalized in popular culture.
