PENGARUH TINGKAT PEMAHAMAN PETANI TOMAT (Solanum lycopersicum L.) MENGENAI PESTISIDA dan KEPATUHANNYA DALAM APLIKASI TERHADAP HAMA dan PENYAKIT DI SUMATERA SELATAN

Fatonah, Aulia Sabila - Personal Name;

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a major horticultural commodity with increasing demand due to its desirable fruit quality characteristics and the wide variety of processed products derived from it. However, field productivity is often constrained by plant pest and disease infestations that can significantly reduce yield. Chemical pesticides remain the primary control strategy, although their intensive use may result in hazardous residues, pest resistance, and soil quality deterioration. Therefore, the implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and farmer awareness regarding pesticide use are essential components of sustainable tomato cultivation.This study aims to identify pest and disease types, attack intensities, populations of natural enemies, and to evaluate farmers’ compliance with pesticide use on tomato crops in South Sumatra Province. A survey method was applied through direct field observations in purposively selected tomato-growing areas. Pest and disease assessments were conducted using simple random sampling with a minimum of 50 plants per site. Structured interviews were administered to assess farmers’ knowledge and adherence to recommended pesticide practices. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel and RStudio to calculate attack percentages, attack intensities, and to perform correlation analyses between farmer compliance and pest attack levels. The results are expected to provide scientific insights into pest population dynamics, the role of natural enemies, and pesticide use patterns among farmers. These findings may serve as a foundation for developing more effective and environmentally sound pest and disease management strategies, supporting the sustainable implementation of IPM in tomato production systems in South Sumatra. This research analyzes the relationship between farmers' understanding and compliance with pesticide use and the intensity of pest attacks on tomato plants in South Sumatra. Increased education and technical assistance are needed for farmers to ensure proper pesticide use and support more efficient integrated pest management practices.
