ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF PEER INTERACTION ON THE ENGLISH SPEAKING PROFICIENCY OF THE 2ND SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM AT THE FACULTY OF TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY
This study aims to examine the impact of peer interaction on the English speaking ability of second-semester Palembang students of the English Language Education Study Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sriwijaya University. The research participants consisted of 29 second-semester students from classes 2A and 2B of the English Education Study Program, Palembang Campus, Sriwijaya University. A Mixed Methods Research Design was used, combining quantitative and qualitative data. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire (15 items with a Likert scale) for quantitative findings and in-depth interviews with 12 students for qualitative insights. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive percentage analysis to measure student perceptions. Qualitative data from interviews were analyzed by grouping them into emerging themes (e.g., greater confidence, reduced anxiety). Quantitative findings showed a strong positive impact between active peer interaction and increased fluency, confidence (85% agreed), and motivation (78% agreed) in speaking. Qualitative data confirmed that students felt more confident, less anxious, and more motivated when practicing with peers in an informal setting. This study concludes that peer interaction plays an important role in developing students' English speaking skills. It is recommended that future studies double the sample size and duration of the study to better understand the long-term effects, as well as integrate classroom observations and assessment rubrics to improve data validity.
