INVESTIGATING ERRORS IN SENTENCE STRUCTURE AND PUNCTUATION IN NON-ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS’ WRITING: CAUSE AND REMEDIES
This study investigates sentence structure and punctuation errors in the writing of non-English Department students at Sriwijaya University, focusing on error types, causes, and possible remedies. A qualitative descriptive design was used with data from writing tests of 20 students and interviews with three students representing different proficiency levels. The analysis was based on Corder’s (1974) Error Analysis framework. The findings show that sentence structure errors were more frequent than punctuation errors. A total of 453 sentence structure errors were found, dominated by misformation errors involving verb forms, tense, and subject verb agreement, followed by omission errors. In addition, 80 punctuation errors were identified, mainly related to missing periods, comma misuse, capitalization, and apostrophes. Interviews indicated that limited grammar mastery, first language interference, lack of practice and feedback, and psychological factors contributed to these errors. Therefore, explicit grammar instruction, focused feedback, and increased writing practice are recommended to improve students’ writing accuracy.
