WOMEN AND CHOICES DALAM FILM LITTLE WOMEN (2019): ANALISIS WACANA KRITIS SARA MILLS

Lestari, Ayu - Personal Name;

Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019) portrays women confronting multiple life choices within patriarchal social, economic, and cultural structures. This study aims to examine the representation of women and choices using Sara Mills’ Critical Discourse Analysis, focusing on subject-object positioning and audience positioning. Adopting a critical paradigm and a qualitative approach, the research analyzes seven key scenes that depict women’s choices in the domains of social class, intimate relationships, the institution of marriage, and creative work. The findings show that women and choices are not presented as natural individual freedom, but as a negotiation constrained by unequal access, gendered standards of respectability, and economic demands. The film further exposes institutional mechanisms that regulate women’s choices, including the moral delegitimization of women’s work, the normalization of marriage as the “proper” ending, and the cultural industry’s marketing of patriarchal norms as “audience preference.” Women’s positions in discourse are dynamic: female characters are often constructed as objects of judgment and pressure, yet shifts occur when they set boundaries, resist normative coercion, and reclaim interpretive authority and material control. The film also positions viewers to evaluate women’s choices contextually rather than through moralistic or binary lens.
