The incident involving the death of Affan Kurniawan following police violence in August 2025 sparked extensive public engagement on social media, particularly on Instagram. Among university students, this moment was marked by the circulation of the All Cops Are Bastards (ACAB) or 1312 symbol as a form of digital activism. This study examines how Communication Science students at Universitas Sriwijaya construct the meaning of the ACAB/1312 symbol on Instagram in the post-incident context. This research adopts a qualitative interpretive approach grounded in a constructivist paradigm. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The analysis draws on Berger and Luckmann’s Social Construction of Reality framework, focusing on the processes of externalization, objectivation, and internalization. The findings show that at the stage of externalization, students employed the ACAB/1312 symbol to articulate moral positions, emotional responses, and critical attitudes toward police violence. During objectivation, the symbol gained shared legitimacy through repeated circulation, reposting, and audience engagement, establishing it as a collective symbol of institutional critique rather than an expression of personal hostility toward individual officers. At the stage of internalization, the symbol contributed to the formation of sustained critical awareness, empathy, and moral identity within students’ digital activism practices. This study highlights Instagram as a symbolic arena where digital activism facilitates not only expression but also the ongoing construction of collective meaning and critical consciousness regarding police violence and social justice.
