DEVELOPMENT OF A MATHEMATICS LITERACY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT MODEL ASSISTED BY EDUCATIONAL ROLE PLAY GAMES IN THE CONTEXT OF RELIGIOUS TOURISM IN CIREBON FOR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Hamidah, Ida - Personal Name;

Mathematical literacy is a key competency required for students to address the challenges of the 21st century; however, international assessments such as PISA indicate that Indonesian students’ mathematical literacy remains relatively low, particularly in reasoning, problem solving, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. This condition reflects a gap between national assessment demands and classroom practices that are still predominantly procedural and teacher-centered. Therefore, innovative and contextual learning environments are needed to support the development of students’ mathematical literacy. This dissertation aims to develop and evaluate a Mathematical Literacy Learning Environment Model supported by Educational Role-Play Games (MLLEM–RPG) for junior high school students. The model integrates the principles of Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI), authentic cultural contexts from religious tourism in Cirebon, and narrative- and role-based learning facilitated through educational role-play games. The study employs an article-based design research approach, consisting of a scoping review, a systematic literature review, the development of culturally based Hypothetical Learning Trajectories (HLT), and the iterative design, implementation, and evaluation of an RPG-assisted hybrid learning environment. The evaluation results indicate that the MLLEM–RPG model is valid, practical, and effective in supporting teacher facilitation and enhancing students’ mathematical literacy, particularly in formulating, applying, and interpreting mathematics in contextual situations. The model also promotes student engagement, motivation, and reflective learning. This research contributes theoretically by extending mathematical literacy and learning environment frameworks through the integration of PMRI, local cultural contexts, and educational games, and practically by offering a sustainable and culturally meaningful learning model for junior high school mathematics education.
