KEANEKARAGAMAN SPESIES SERANGGA FITOFAG PADA PERTANAMAN TERUNG (Solanum melongena L.) YANG DITANAMI DENGAN DAN TANPA BUNGA Zinnia elegans

Manalu, Karolina Angel Estefani - Personal Name;

Indonesia, as a tropical country, has high agricultural potential, including the economically valuable eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) commodity. However, eggplant production is often disrupted by plant pests, particularly phytophagous insects such as Empoasca sp. and Altica lythri. This study aims to evaluate the effect of Zinnia elegans refugia plants on the population of phytophagous insects in Solanum melongena L. eggplant plantations in South Sumatra, as well as its impact on crop yields. The study was conducted on 0.81 ha of farmland with two treatments: eggplant cultivation without Z. elegans (P1) and with Z. elegans (P2). Insect data were collected using pitfall traps and pan traps for 10 weeks, followed by morphological identification and analysis of the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H'), dominance index (d), and evenness index (E). Harvest results were observed over 14 cycles. The results showed a decline in the population of phytophagous insects in pitfall traps from 143 individuals (12 species) in P1 to 64 individuals (6 species) in P2, and in pan traps from 313 individuals (20 species) to 189 individuals (12 species). The diversity and evenness indices were higher in P2 in pan traps (1,190 and ,479), indicating diversification of the insect community. In pitfall traps, the diversity index was higher in P1 (1,222). Total harvest increased from 1.953 kg in P1 to 2.752 kg in P2. Z. elegans is effective as a refuge for reducing phytophagous populations, enhancing ecosystem stability, and increasing eggplant productivity, supporting sustainable natural pest control.
