This study is motivated by the phenomenon of people in Mertapah Village leasing their land to PT Pemukasakti Manisindah (PSMI) for sugarcane cultivation. The shift in land use patterns is influenced by economic conditions, unstable agricultural income, and cooperation offers from the company. This study aims to examine the community's experiences in leasing land, identify the motives behind their decisions, and understand the meaning of land leasing in their lives. This research used a qualitative method with Alfred Schutz's phenomenological approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving community members who leased their land to PT PSMI. The results show that the decision to lease land was influenced by social environmental factors, unstable rubber prices, crop failure experiences, unproductive rubber trees, and limited labor availability. In addition, the community aimed to obtain stable income, fulfill family and children's educational needs, and gain business capital. Land leasing is interpreted by the community as a source of livelihood, a way to maintain economic stability, and a survival strategy. In conclusion, land leasing to PT PSMI represents the community's adaptation to changing economic and agricultural conditions in Mertapah Village.
