SINTESIS BIODIESEL DARI CRUDE PALM OIL (CPO) MENGGUNAKAN METODE ELEKTROLISIS DENGAN VARIASI PENGARUH WAKTU DAN KUAT ARUS LISTRIK

Pratiwi, Maisyah Wanda - Personal Name;

A global issue that remains a topic of discussion to this day is the energy crisis caused by the dwindling supply of non-renewable energy and environmental pollution. Therefore, every country is starting to look for alternative energy sources that can be used, especially from biological resources, one of which is biodiesel. Biodiesel is a type of fuel derived from renewable resources. An innovation in biodiesel production can be carried out using the electrolysis method. In this study, biodiesel synthesis was carried out using the electrolysis method based on variations in reaction time (1,2, and 3 hours) and variations in current strength (20, 30, and 40 A) using graphite electrodes. The free fatty acid (FFA) value of the crude palm oil (CPO) sample was found to be 5.41%, exceeding the limit set in SNI-01-2901-2006, which specifies a CPO quality standard value of 5%. The esterification reaction was carried out as a pre-treatment before the transesterification reaction. Based on the analysis, in the esterification and transesterification reactions, the color produced did not show a significant difference. The methyl esters from the reaction products were characterized using GC-MS instruments. The study results showed that the optimal biodiesel yield using the electrolysis method was achieved at a 2-hour duration with a current strength of 20 A, reaching 95.65%. The GC-MS characterization results of the electrolysis method at 2 hours with 30 A showed that the dominant compounds forming biodiesel were methyl esters, including methyl palmitate and methyl oleate, with a very high similarity index (SI). Keywords : Crude Palm Oil (CPO), Biodiesel, Electrolysis, Free Fatty Acids (FFA), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
