POTENSI PENGEMBANGAN DAUN SENDUDUK (Melastoma malabathricum L.) MENJADI SEDIAAN TEH
Tea is widely recognized as a functional beverage due to its rich content of bioactive compounds that may provide beneficial health effects, particularly as a source of antioxidants. Recently, the development of herbal teas derived from medicinal plants has gained increasing attention. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of Melastoma malabathricum leaves (senduduk) for development as a herbal tea product. The research was initiated by preparing an aqueous extract of senduduk leaves using hot water at 100°C. The extract was subsequently analyzed to determine total phenolic and total flavonoid contents. Antioxidant activity was further evaluated using three different methods: DPPH (2,2-di(4-tert-octylphenyl)- 1-picrylhydrazyl), FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power), and ABTS (2,2′- azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)). The results showed that the aqueous extract of senduduk leaves contained total phenolic compounds of 79.1625 mg GAE/g simplicia, which was lower than that of brewed tea extract (172.5962 mg GAE/g simplicia) but higher than that of butterfly pea flower extract (73.0775 mgGAE/g simplicia). The total flavonoid content of senduduk leaf extract was 1.2640 mg QE/g simplicia, which was lower than the comparator samples (butterfly pea flower tea and commercial Sariwangi tea). In the FRAP assay, the aqueous extract of senduduk leaves exhibited a TEAC (Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity) value of 61.60 µmol troloks/g simplicia. The antioxidant activity was positively correlated with total phenolic content. Although the antioxidant activity of senduduk leaf tea extract was lower than that of commercial Sariwangi tea, it was higher than that of butterfly pea herbal tea. These findings indicate that senduduk leaves have promising potential for further development as a herbal tea product.
