Aritonang, Alfredo Grace Anggito - Personal Name;

Rice is a major food commodity in Indonesia, however rice production has declined due to a reduction in agricultural land area caused by land conversion. This situation has highlighted the need to utilize non-conventional land, one of which is through the optimization of oil palm plantation areas using an intercropping system. This study aims to identify local upland rice accessions from North Sumatra that possess the best adaptability and yield potential under the intercropping system within oil palm stands. The research was conducted at the Oil Palm Research Station, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, North Indralaya, South Sumatra, from November 2025 to February 2026. The study used a one-factor randomized block design (RBD) comprising six upland rice accessions Si Ombun, Si Ramos, Si Rapat, Gambiri, Marisi, and Lobbou with four replications. The results showed that the Gambiri accession had the best adaptability and productivity potential compared to the other accessions in the oil palm intercropping system, as indicated by a germination rate of 88.92% at 14 days after sowing, plant height of 75.95 cm, number of productive tillers of 3.57 stems, panicle weight of 4.92 g, wet grain weight of 4.67 g, and dry grain weight of 3.92 g. The application of the upland rice intercropping system did not affect the growth and yield of oil palm. The utilization of oil palm plantation land through the rice intercropping system has the potential to become a strategy for improving land use efficiency and supporting sustainable food production.
