KARAKTERISASI KEKERINGAN DENGAN METODE STANDARDIZED PRECIPITATION INDEX (SPI) PADA WILAYAH OGAN ILIR , SUMATERA SELATAN

Meteorological drought is one of the hydrometeorological phenomena that frequently occurs in tropical regions and has the potential to cause various environmental impacts, including an increased risk of forest and land fires. Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra, is an area that is relatively vulnerable to drought events, particularly during the dry season, which is influenced by global climate variability such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This study aims to characterize meteorological drought in Ogan Ilir Regency using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) method and to analyze the relationship between drought conditions and the potential occurrence of land fires. The data used in this study consist of monthly rainfall data for the period 1995–2024 obtained from the CHIRPS dataset. The SPI analysis was conducted at time scales of 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months to identify the temporal and spatial dynamics of drought. The results indicate that SPI values during the study period range from −3.0 to +3.3, representing conditions from extremely dry to extremely wet. Extreme drought events generally occur during the dry season, particularly from July to October, with SPI values ≤ −1.5 that repeatedly appear during strong El Niño years such as 1997, 1998, 2015, and 2019. Spatial analysis shows that the distribution of drought in Ogan Ilir Regency is not uniform, with the central and southern regions tending to experience drier conditions. Furthermore, periods characterized by strongly negative SPI values are associated with an increase in hotspot occurrences by two to three times compared to normal conditions. These findings indicate that the SPI method is effective as an indicator for identifying and monitoring meteorological drought and has the potential to support early warning systems for land fire risk in Ogan Ilir Regency.
