DEVELOPING A LOCAL CULTURE-BASED AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA IN EFL TEACHING TO PROMOTE STUDENTS’ CULTURAL AWARENESS
In the era of globalization, integrating local culture into English language teaching is important to promote students’ cultural awareness while improving their language skills. This study aimed to develop a local culture-based audiovisual media in EFL teaching for seventh-grade students. The product was designed as supplementary learning media integrating Palembang local culture into English learning through interactive audiovisual materials. This study employed a development research design using the ADDIE model, consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation stages. Formative evaluation was conducted through one-to-one evaluation, small group evaluation, and field testing. The participants were seventh-grade students at SMPIT Harapan Mulia Palembang, Indonesia. The needs analysis involved 130 students and two English teachers, while the one-to-one, small group, and field test involved three, nine, and sixteen students respectively. The validation process involved experts in English language education, instructional design, media development, and local cultural content. The developed product was presented in an interactive flipbook format containing descriptive, narrative, and procedure texts integrated with audio narration, visuals, mini games, and project-based activities related to Palembang culture. The findings showed that the developed media achieved a very high level of validity, practicality, and positive potential effect on students’ learning outcomes and cultural awareness.
