INVESTIGATING STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF VARIOUS ENGLISH ACCENTS IN ENGLISH LISTENING EXPERIENCES THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS AT SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY
The growing use of social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram has broadened students' exposure to diverse English accents beyond the classroom, yet little research has examined how English Education students perceive these accents and how such perceptions affect their listening experiences. This study explored those perceptions among eight fourth-semester students at Sriwijaya University's English Education Study Program, using a qualitative case study design with semi-structured Zoom interviews analyzed through Braun and Clarke's (2019) thematic analysis. Three major themes emerged: (1) familiarity with accents, built through repeated exposure, improved comprehensibility and reduced listening anxiety; (2) familiar accents boosted listening confidence, while unfamiliar ones caused uncertainty; and (3) students faced challenges with rapid speech, unfamiliar pronunciation, and slang, which they managed using subtitles, video replays, playback speed adjustments, and contextual clues. Overall, students showed positive attitudes toward accent diversity and valued intelligibility over native-like pronunciation, aligning with World Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca frameworks. The findings highlight social media as an informal learning environment that fosters accent adaptability and inclusive perspectives on global English communication.
