GERAKAN SOSIAL KONTEMPORER DALAM NOVEL LAUT BERCERITA KARYA LEILA S. CHUDORI Sitohang, Brigita Angelina Pratasya

This study examines contemporary social movements in Leila S. Chudori’s novel The Sea Speaks His Name (2017). The novel recounts the struggle of student activists specifically the Winatra group, led by the protagonist Biru Laut in opposing the New Order regime. The narrative is divided into two time periods: the pre-tragedy phase, set from 1991 through the forced disappearances of 1998; and the post-tragedy phase, which highlights the struggle of Asmara Jati (Biru Laut’s younger sister) and the families of victims as they grapple with the trauma of forced disappearances from 2000 to 2007. This study focuses on social movements, depicted through the mapping of social movement actors, a sequence of events, and forms of action. Furthermore, this research is constructed based on the three pillars of Alain Touraine’s New Social Movement Theory: identity (the self-definition of actors), opposition (identification of opponents), and totality (the outcome of what is being fought for). This study employs a qualitative method with this analytical technique. The research findings regarding the mapping of actors include intellectual actors who shape the movement’s direction, solidarity actors who maintain group cohesion, internal betrayal actors who reveal the group’s vulnerabilities, and actors engaged in the struggle against trauma at both the national and international levels. The narrative of the movement is constructed through a series of events, ranging from critical discussions of various books as a foundation for consciousness against the regime and in defense of the people, to the Winatra group’s field actions through agrarian and labor protests, and their nomadic way of life. Analysis through the theory of new social movements reveals the formation of collective identity and solidarity by the Winatra group, which began with critical discussions and transformed into direct action, as well as the identity of the struggle against post-tragedy trauma carried out by Asmara Jati and the victims’ families. Second, the principle of opposition emerging as resistance against the dominance of the New Order regime. Third, the principle of totality, reflected in the efforts to reclaim human dignity championed by Asmara Jati and the victims’ families through the establishment of the Commission and the Aksi Kamisan, extending to the struggle for justice on the international stage. The novel *Laut Bercerita* demonstrates the role of literary works as a medium for retelling Indonesia’s history and as a vehicle for moral struggle in preserving the nation’s collective memory.
