This study was motivated by evidence suggesting that the quality of friendships among junior high school students is not always positive. One factor believed to be related to this is emotional intelligence. The purpose of this study is to determine the levels of emotional intelligence and friendship quality, as well as to examine the relationship between the two among students at SMP Negeri 52 Palembang. This study employs a quantitative, correlational approach. The study population consisted of all students, with a sample of 295 students selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data collection employed questionnaires measuring emotional intelligence and friendship quality. Data analysis utilized descriptive statistics and the Pearson Product Moment correlation test. The results indicated that the levels of emotional intelligence and friendship quality among students were generally high. Furthermore, there is a significant, positive, and strong relationship between emotional intelligence and friendship quality among students at SMP Negeri 52 Palembang (r = 0.617; p = 0.000). These findings can serve as a basis for guidance and counseling teachers to design and implement guidance and counseling services aimed at improving students’ friendship quality.
