EFIKASI KRIM EKSTRAK BONGGOL NANAS (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) TERHADAP INFEKSI Staphylococcus aureus PADA KULIT Rattus norvegicus
Background: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the leading causes of skin infections. The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance has become a major challenge in the management of these infections. Pineapple core (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.), an agricultural by-product containing bioactive compounds, is a promising candidate for topical phytopharmaceutical development because of its antibacterial properties. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of pineapple core extract (PCE) cream against Staphylococcus aureus skin infection in Rattus norvegicus. Methods: This in vivo experimental study used a pretest-posttest control group design involving forty male Rattus norvegicus divided into five groups: PCE cream at concentrations of 25%, 35%, and 50%, a positive control group treated with 2% fusidic acid cream, and a negative control group treated with vehicle cream. A skin infection model was established by creating a dorsal skin excision followed by inoculation with S. aureus. Topical treatment was administered twice daily for seven days. Efficacy was assessed using NERDS® scores (non-healing, exudative wound, red friable granulation tissue, debris or discolouration, and smell); lesion area; bacterial colony counts; and Gram stain findings on Day 1 and Day 7. Results: After 7 days of treatment, NERDS® scores decreased significantly in the 35% PCE cream, 50% PCE cream, and 2% fusidic acid groups (p=0.008, p=0.009, and p=0.010, respectively).
