This study aims to analyze the sustainable utilization of freshwater swamps in meeting the food needs of the community in Kuro Village, Pampangan Subdistrict, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, as well as to identify various constraints encountered in the process. This study employs a qualitative method using a case study approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation from 10 informants, comprising key, primary, and supporting informants. The results indicate that the community utilizes the peat swamp as a primary food source through rice farming, fisheries, and swamp buffalo husbandry. This utilization was analyzed using Van Koppen’s framework, which encompasses three aspects: the natural resource approach (sustainability of production), the “Arcadian” approach (cultural values and ecosystem balance), and the social construction approach (social meanings and gender roles). Although the peat swamp has great potential, there are significant constraints hindering the optimization of its utilization, including extreme climate change, dependence on expensive chemical fertilizers, crop pest infestations, environmentally destructive fishing practices (electrofishing and poison), as well as limited capital and institutional support. It can be concluded that the utilization of the peat swamp forest in Kuro Village has played a crucial role in meeting food needs; however, its sustainability remains threatened by various ecological, technical, and social barriers that require further attention.
