ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDENTS’ EXPERIENCES OF USING DISCORD FOR INFORMAL ENGLISH LEARNING: A QUALITATIVE STUDY AT UNIVERSITAS SRIWIJAYA

English language learning is no longer limited to the classroom. As digital platforms become increasingly embedded in students' daily lives, informal spaces such as Discord have emerged as platforms where English engagement can happen naturally. This study investigates university students' experiences of using Discord for informal English learning and how they experience English language development through their use of the platform. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten English Education students at Universitas Sriwijaya and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that participants used Discord primarily for interest-based communities, with some engaging occasionally and others daily, experiencing it as a low-pressure environment where English learning occurred incidentally rather than intentionally, though they encountered challenges such as unfamiliar slang and fast speech. The skill gains varied by usage pattern, voice channel users reported improvement in speaking confidence and spontaneity, text-based users gained in reading informal English and internet expressions, writing improvement was limited to informal fluency with little transfer to academic contexts, and listening gains included greater familiarity with diverse accents. Overall, participants viewed Discord as a complementary space that supported rather than replaced formal learning. These findings suggest that informal digital platforms can play a meaningful role in English language development. It is recommended that educators acknowledge students' informal digital learning experiences and explore ways to connect them to formal classroom instruction, helping students reflect on and maximize the language learning potential of platforms they already engage with daily.
