DISTRIBUSI MIKROPLASTIK PADA SEDIMEN MUARA SUNGAI MUSI

Fandya, Anisa Kurnia - Personal Name;

The Musi River Estuary is an estuarine area that has the potential to become a site for microplastic accumulation due to various anthropogenic activities. Sediment acts as a long-term accumulation medium for microplastics because the particles tend to settle at the bottom of the waters. This study aimed to analyze the abundance, shape, color, and polymer types of microplastics in sediment, sediment texture, and the relationship between sediment characteristics and microplastic distribution in the Musi River Estuary, South Sumatra. The study was conducted in November 2025 at nine stations using a stratified purposive sampling method. Sediment samples were analyzed through density separation, microplastic identification, sediment texture analysis, and polymer identification using FT-IR, while the relationship among variables was analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The results showed that microplastics were found at all stations with abundances ranging from 32–226 particles/kg dry sediment. The microplastic forms consisted of fiber, fragment, film, and pellet, with fiber being the dominant form. The dominant microplastic colors were blue and black, while the dominant identified polymers were Nylon and Nitrile. Sediment texture at all stations was dominated by sand fraction. PCA results showed that microplastic abundance was positively correlated with clay fraction and negatively correlated with sand and silt fractions, indicating that fine sediments tend to accumulate microplastics more effectively.
