PENGARUH PARAMETER KUALITAS PERAIRAN TERHADAP KEPADATAN ZOOXANTHELLAE PADA KARANG SIMBION DI PULAU PAHAWANG, KABUPATEN PESAWARAN, LAMPUNG SELATAN

Anugerah, Nanda Rizky - Personal Name;

The symbiotic relationship between hermatypic corals and zooxanthellae determines the productivity and resilience of coral reef ecosystems. Changes in water quality due to anthropogenic pressures may affect the density of zooxanthellae as the primary coral symbionts. This study aimed to analyze the density of zooxanthellae in branching corals and examine its relationship with the physico-chemical parameters of the waters of Pulau Pahawang. The research was conducted in September 2025 at four stations representing different gradients of human activity, namely the harbor area, floating net cage (KJA) area, tourism area, and natural area. Parameters measured included temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), depth, water transparency, and nitrate and phosphate concentrations. Zooxanthellae density was calculated using the hemocytometer method with a modified Wickstead (1965) formula, while the relationships among parameters were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis .The results showed that temperature ranged from 29.9-30.0°C, salinity from 32.0-32.1 psu, pH from 7.8-7.9, and DO from 5.5-6.4 mg/L, all of which remain within ranges supportive of coral life. Zooxanthellae density ranged from 1.68 × 10⁴ to 2.22 × 10⁴ cells/cm², with the highest density recorded at the harbor station (22,227 cells/cm²) and the lowest at the floating net cage station (16,822 cells/cm²). PCA results indicated that dissolved oxygen showed the strongest positive correlation with zooxanthellae density, while depth and light intensity acted as controlling factors in cell distribution. These findings indicate that although the water quality of Pulau Pahawang remains within ecological tolerance limits, variations in zooxanthellae density reflect responses to differing environmental pressures. Therefore, water quality management is a key factor in maintaining the stability of coral reef ecosystems.
