PRAKTIK SOSIAL PERNIKAHAN MASYARAKAT ETNIS ARAB DALAM MENJAGA GARIS KETURUNAN DI KELURAHAN 10 ILIR KOTA PALEMBANG
This study aims to analyze the marriage practices of the Arab ethnic community in 10 Ilir Subdistrict, Palembang City, in maintaining lineage, using the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice, which includes the concepts of habitus, capital, and field. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The findings indicate that marriage practices within the Arab ethnic community are inseparable from their social and cultural context, including the value of maintaining lineage, the role of the family, and the influence of religious teachings. The tendency to marry within the same ethnic group is not merely an individual choice, but also the result of habitual patterns formed within family and community environments. Furthermore, marriage practices are influenced by the possession of economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capital, which determine individuals’ readiness and position. Habitus, shaped through the process of socialization, also influences individuals’ perspectives on suitable partners. These practices take place within a structured social field, where families and religious figures occupy dominant positions. Marriage is therefore not only a relationship between individuals, but also a social mechanism for maintaining lineage, preserving cultural values, and reinforcing the community’s social structure. Amid increasing openness toward cross-cultural marriage, this practice reflects an effort to maintain social boundaries while simultaneously reproducing existing values.
