Current developments in information and communication technology have brought about innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI). In the field of education, the use of AI particularly ChatGPT is growing and has the potential to influence students’ reading interest. This study aims to determine the effect of using ChatGPT artificial intelligence on reading interest among students in the Economics Education Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sriwijaya University, Class of 2023–2024. This study employs a quantitative research method with a causal-associative approach. The study population consists of all Economics Education students at Sriwijaya University. The sample comprises 65 students selected using the Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling method; through this technique, each cohort receives an equal opportunity to be included in the sample. The data collection techniques used in this study were questionnaires and interviews. Instrument validity was tested using the Pearson Product Moment correlation formula, and reliability was tested using Cronbach’s Alpha formula. The data analysis techniques employed in this study included inferential statistics, prerequisite tests, and hypothesis testing. The results indicate a positive influence between the use of artificial intelligence ChatGPT and reading interest among students in the Economics Education Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sriwijaya University, Class of 2023-2024, as indicated by the regression equation Y = 67.911 + 0.349X and the calculated tvalue = 4.1058 ≥ critical tvalue = 1.9930, which means Ha is accepted and H₀ is rejected. The magnitude of the influence of ChatGPT artificial intelligence is 21%, while the remaining 79% is influenced by other factors. Students are encouraged to use ChatGPT more consistently as a learning tool in their academic activities and to make the most of their free time by reading relevant additional references. For future researchers, it is recommended to include additional variables, expand the study population and sample size, and employ a wider range of methods to obtain more comprehensive results.
