REPRESENTASI PENDAKI LAKI LAKI PADA KONTEN YOUTUBE FIERSA BESARI ATAP NEGERI PAPUA TENGAH: ANALISIS SEMIOTIKA ROLAND BARTHES
This research stems from the phenomenon of negotiating masculinity narratives within mountaineering activities in digital media spaces. Amidst the dominance of mountaineering traditions that often reproduce hegemonic masculinity, emphasizing physical strength and the conquest of nature, Fiersa Besari’s YouTube series titled "Atap Negeri Papua Tengah" presents a contradictory representation of identity. This study aims to deconstruct and describe the construction of male climber identity through the levels of sign significance: denotation, connotation, and myth. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach with Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis as the analytical framework, this study examines five video episodes of the Puncak Jaya expedition. Data were collected through multimodal documentation, exploring visual elements, verbal narratives, and audio components. The research findings reveal that: (1) At the denotative level, the male climber’s identity is constructed through a realism of suffering, which honestly portrays physical vulnerability and the deconstruction of heroism, representing the Awareness and Deconstruction phases within the ADAM-n framework. (2) At the connotative level, there is a shift in meaning from a conqueror figure to a protector figure that prioritizes values of caring and domestic empathy as forms of Amendment and Modification regarding the human-nature relationship. (3) At the mythical level, this research identifies the emergence of a new masculinity standard referring to the Eco-man identity. Through relational narratives, Fiersa Besari naturalizes the ideal climber figure not as a master of the peak (mastery over nature), but as a humanist subject practicing Husbandry (caretaking) aligned with ecological ethics (Nourish).
