NEGOSIASI IDENTITAS BUDAYA DALAM SENI TARI KEJEI DAN TARI PERSEMBAHAN PADA MASYARAKAT REJANG LEBONG
The Rejang ethnic group is one of the indigenous communities residing in Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu Province. Within Rejang society, there are two traditional dances that represent their cultural identity: the Kejei Dance and the Persembahan Dance. Normatively, the Kejei Dance is recognized as an ancestral heritage that holds a high position within the customary structure. However, in social practice, the Persembahan Dance is performed more frequently due to its flexibility and the absence of strict ritual obligations. This condition has led to the dominance of the Persembahan Dance in the daily cultural practices of the Rejang community. Although the Kejei Dance holds a prestigious position in customary law, its sacred value limits its performance in public spaces. This study employs Cultural Identity Theory, which posits that cultural identity is dynamic and constructed through the processes of avowal (self-acknowledgment) and ascription (external labeling). Through these processes, a community’s culture is negotiated according to social contexts and societal needs. This research applies a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that cultural identity within the Rejang community is formed through communicative processes involving avowal, ascription, and ongoing negotiation. The Kejei Dance is maintained as a sacred customary symbol of the Rejang people, yet it is not always chosen for everyday social practices. In contrast, the Persembahan Dance functions as a form of cultural adaptation that aligns more closely with contemporary social conditions.
