Di Indonesia zakat relatif masih belum diberdayakan secara maksimal. Padahal di zaman Rasulullah Saw, zakat merupakan salah satu pemasukan keuangan terpenting dalam mengelola pemerinyahan. Pada waktu itu pelaksanaan zakat sama sekali tidak membebani negara karena dikelola secara khusus oleh Bait al- Mal, bahkan dana zakat itu membantu negara dalam memenuhi berbagai kebutuhannya.
